Little Ghost Girl on Old Montauk Highway

by Anthony Zummo
(West Babylon, Long Island)

Back in 1996 I was driving two of my friends back from a club on Long Island’s south fork. The club was near the end of Old Montauk Highway around the Hamptons area.

For anyone who doesn't know the area, it consists of long strips of woods lining both sides of the highway between patches of towns. (Editor’s note: This area is part of Long Island’s Pine Barrens, which as the name suggests, is desolate.)

It was around 3 AM when we were heading back home and I admit I was doing around 50 mph in a 35mph zone, but figured no one would really be out at that time of night except police catching speeders as they came into small towns. I was the designated driver and hadn't had anything to drink all night.

20 minutes into our trip the road slightly curved to the left as a town came into sight (seemed to be around Amaganset or in that area). I leaned over to fast forward my tape deck and when I looked up I noticed a little girl skipping across the street.

I could remember what she was wearing clear as day. She was in a dark red dress with white trim and a white bib style front to the dress. Her hair was brown and was up in a ponytail.

She turned to look at me, but before our eyes could lock I slammed both feet on my brakes. My car slid at least 15 feet until I heard and felt two distinct bumps in my steering wheel. I became frozen by the idea of running a child over since I have 6 nieces myself.

I look over and noticed that my two sleeping passengers were jolted awake by my sudden stopping. They both looked at me as if my appearance scared them. I was sheet white and my hands were still clutched to the steering wheel.

I was petrified as to what awaited me under my car. So I slowly opened the driver side door and stepped out. I looked behind my car and could only see my tire marks on the asphalt. I looked under the car and saw nothing.

When I looked back in the car to my friends they asked if I was okay and that we should pull the car over to the side of the road. (Yes, I was still in the middle of the road). We pulled over and sat there for more than a half our while my body kept shaking and my eyes kept watering.

I’ve never gone back there, but wish I knew what had happened or who she was. If anyone else has experienced her could you please let me know what town it was in?

I need to get more answers. If anyone else can help me with this, I would really appreciate it.

The real story NEW
by: Anonymous

Just seeing this and want to chime in. The location you're referring to is Amagansett. As you are heading west from Montauk (where the clubs are), along Napeague Stretch (with the pines on either side), and into Amagansett where just before you enter the short Main Street stretch, you make a slight left turn as the road continues through town. Exactly where the turn ends, where you saw the girl run across the road, there is the memorial flagpole and fire station on your right, and the historical Amagansett cemetery on your left. Occupants of this cemetery go back to the 1700's. I've never heard of this particular event happening prior or anything strange from the cemetery, and I was born and raised in Amagansett from the early 1960's. I do however know the cemetery is considered to be quite haunted.

I saw them both! NEW
by: Kelly

Last night I was walking back from the IGA, Westward- down the old Montauk highway. Across the street by the entrance to Kirk Park I saw a woman standing with a little girl playing behind her on the grass. I figured it was a mom with her daughter and there must've been a playground over there. I didn't get a good look at the little girl to see what she was wearing but she was small, 5-10 years old maybe. The woman was wearing white layers, possibly a dress with a shawl over it. Being a New Yorker I didn't want to stare too long at them so I looked away, figuring they were real people I didn't want to bother them. But when I glanced back they were both gone. I even stopped and walked back to double check I knew for sure that I had seen two people there. I started to Google to see if it was a story behind this but I haven't found any information so far. Any ideas?

I saw the same girl
by: Anonymous

A group of friends and I had gone away to Montauk for Memorial Day weekend. Our hotel was about 5 minutes out of town and was abnormally empty for such a big get away weekend. Im pretty sure were the only people staying in the hotel that weekend. The second night we were there we decided to have a bonfire on the beach. We were out there pretty late and around 1am we saw a little girl walk past where we were sitting along the beach. No parents. She was alone which is what threw us off the most. She couldn't have been older than 8. We all fell silent. She had no flashlight and no means of seeing where she was going. She didn't look up at us or the fire and went on her way. She also had a pony tail and a dress on. It was dark so it was hard to make out what color. She went on her way into the dark. We had planned to stay out there until like 3am but after that experience we put out the fire, ran back into our hotel rooms, and locked the doors behind us.

Scary coincidence
by: Matt

3 years ago I was asleep in the car with my friend and my dad was driving. We were going fishing out in Montauk. It was approximately 3 in the morning on old Montauk highway when I was abruptly awakened by my dad swerving violently off the road. He told me a woman's hand brushed past the drivers side windshield. I was extremely freaked out and thought that he had ran someone over. When we pulled over my dad, my friend and I got out the car and looked about 100 feel back to see a woman standing in the middle of the road with hair covering her face wearing a white night gown. She was making a terrible noise and we didn't know what to make of it. I could only see her because other cars were swerving out of her way. My story is eerily similar to your story and I still lose sleep over this. It was definetly a wild experience.

Excellent story, Anthony. I would have been vomiting on the side of the road had that happened to me...

There are a number of legends about ghosts crossing Montauk Highway. You might have witnessed one of them.

Try "Haunted Long Island" by Lynda Lee Macken or "Ghosts Of Long Island" by Kerriann Flanagan Brosky for some answers.
